Minister for Education Grace Grace said Broad Construction Services had been awarded the contract and have already started building the three-level 2020 Ready facility.
It’s expected to take nine months to build, with construction set to wrap up in August next year.
“It’s great news for the local economy, with construction supporting up to 36 jobs.”
Level one will include a library, design and audio-visual studios, project room and conference room, Head of Department offices, and a staff work area complete with a kitchenette.
The upper level will boast six general learning areas, three group learning spaces, a kitchen, storeroom, and amenities, while the under-croft will be fitted out with amenities.
It’ll also have room for a further eight general learning areas if and when they are needed in the future.
Ms Grace said the Palaszczuk Government’s 2020 Ready initiative was supporting more than 60 high schools across the state.
“The 2020 Ready program is delivering additional classrooms we need to manage the increased student population in our high schools that resulted from the introduction of Prep in 2007,” Ms Grace said.
“With the original half-cohort of Prep students set to graduate from high school at the end of 2019, we will have — for the very first time in 2020 — six full-year levels of students in Queensland secondary schools.
“I’d also like to thank the Palm Beach-Currumbin P&C Association for their generous contribution of $996,000 for extra enhancements to the building.”
Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School Principal Christopher Capra said the new building would be an important asset to the school’s future.
“The centre will provide a variety of larger, and more flexible, learning and innovation centres to benefit all year levels,” Mr Capra said.
“The centre’s modern facilities and wireless connectivity will not only cater for our school’s predicted increase in enrolments but also progress our curriculum into the digital age.”
Mr Capra said the new building would also benefit the wider school community, with some of the flexible learning spaces able to transform into a large function room.
